A new study looked into how visual clutter—be it in our homes, offices, or even screens—alters how information flows into the brain.⁴

Studying macaque monkeys (a species with visual systems most similar to ours), the researchers found that visual clutter outside the field of focus influenced how effectively the brain stores info.

  • The researchers likened it to a game of telephone: The more elements that are added, the more likely the message gets convoluted.

  • Essentially, the more we have to distract us, the less our brains are able to receive information accurately.
